About Us

Carrying On

Founded in 1774 by Henry Smith, the farm has weathered many historical events over the last 250 years. Currently managed by the 8th generation Andy Smith and his wife Kim, the focus is on providing premium Angus beef with superior marbling, ribeye, and tenderness.

John Henry Smith, the 7th generation to farm the land, is still actively involved in farming while sharing his valuable knowledge of the farm's history. Learn more about the history of the farm HERE.

Our Values

We prioritize harmony with our ecosystem and compassion for our animals and our team -  operating with integrity and space for a life well-lived.

Our Vision

Smithfield Farms is a professional and values-driven business that enables high-value personal time, supporting the well-being and relationships of its owners. We are connected to nature, pursue excellence in all we do, and intentionally fill our tanks while embracing abundance.

We operate with clarity, accountability, and respect—for people, animals, land, and time. Our business functions smoothly in the owners’ absence through effective systems, empowered employees, and clear decision-making processes. This structure allows for consistent time off, reflection, self-improvement, and exploration beyond the farm—through travel, community, and personal interests.

We create meaningful, fulfilling roles for employees who share in the mission and vision of the farm. Healthy boundaries and transparent communication foster family harmony and alignment with landowners. A thoughtful succession plan provides stability and freedom for all generations, ensuring seamless transitions and a shared sense of purpose. Our enterprises work in harmony with nature, improving the ecosystem and leaving the land better than we found it.

We are an active part of a thriving community.  We provide a space and place for education while operating enterprises that support the well-being of others.  We place a high priority on learning and encourage personal and professional growth with on and off farm events.

John Henry & Pat Smith

Taking over the farm at a young age, John Henry III poured his heart and soul into the operation. The depths of his dedication and knowledge inspire us daily. Mostly retired now, he enjoys taking on special projects, storytelling, and learning more about the history of the farm and Southwest Virginia.

After teaching school for many years, Pat is now our resident gardener

Jake Smith

Specializing in staring contests, frisbee catching, and cattle driving, Jake is our Swiss Army Knife. He loves bones, 4 wheeler ride, and underarm scratches.

Spuds Mackenzie "Tater" Smith

Coming to us as a rescue, Spuds has a sketchy past and a lot of opinions. He specializes in shrill barking, occasionally (and randomly) driving cattle in the right direction, and he loves food, camping, and cuddles with mom.

Joe Smith

Joe is our resident lover. He is sweet to everyone, enjoys runs, is pretty decent at moving cattle, and loves playing ball and going for rides with John Henry - or really with anyone.

Toby - Still with us in our hearts

Toby came to the farm as an old-timer. He instantly fell in love with the lifestyle and with Andy. He had to go ALL the time, even when he occupied the entire bed of the SXS and we had no room for tools to actually work. He lived life to the fullest at a very old age - killing his first groundhog, discovering how awesome water troughs were for cooling off, and mostly, loving and protecting Jake.
